Week 8...

Can you believe that after tonight, it will be not only half way through the season, it will also be nearly the end of 2012, which I’m sure only started  a minute ago.

We now pause for breath / spiritual renewal / presents / carbohydrates / alcohol / overcooked meat and veg / domestic disharmony / TV Christmas “specials” which are nothing of the sort / newspapers with nothing in them / politicians assuring us next year will be better etc and any other amount of twaddle we can all do without.

We are taking the easy way out and having the next 3 Tuesdays off before returning to the fray on Tuesday the 8th of January 2013.

If I don’t see you before can I wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful 2013.

The Draw - Cup Round 2 & Plate Round 1

Cup - Round 1 Results

Week 3...

Some very close games this week, with two of the four games in the B League being as close as you can ever get and ending in draws.

The first three weeks have seen a whole raft of close finishes and the season is a little unusual in that only 5 of the 27 League teams haven't yet lost a game.

Week 1...

We are off and running for 2012-13, and what an excellent set of questions to start with from the Ox-fford 'C'.

Not just I say that, the marks given by all teams averaged out at over 7 out of 10, which history suggests is a remarkably good score!

Week 2 is almost upon us and I will endeavour to keep all records updated more promptly than in recent years. I am slightly running out of excuses too!

Finally, can I just thank all in the Quiz League who so kindly donated to my recent Shine Marathon Walk for Cancer Research in Manchester - thank you everyone. The latest (and nearly final) total raised can be found here...

Cup - Round 1 Draw...

New Season 2012 - 2013

As the traditional wind and rain of Autumn cement their grip around the throat of a desperate, dead summer, what better to cheer us up than Season 32 of the Macclesfield Quiz League!

For those who weren’t at the Finals Night or the AGM, the Cup Final was an all Dolphin affair, with the Dolphin beating the Dolphin Dragons 106 – 81.

The Plate Final was contested…err, no it wasn’t!

The Harrington Academicals were due to play the Park Tavern ‘B’, a side who only entered the Cup last year you may remember and did very well. The Park Tavern team ultimately couldn’t get a team together for the final, arrangements for their attendance seemingly having collapsed at the last minute despite all being well just the night before for them to attend. The Harrington Academicals thus win by a walkover – and the Plate for the third year running!

An entertaining game was then played between the Harrington and a “Scratch” team of quizzers which ended in a 109 – 89 win for the “Scratch” team – a pretty nifty team too consisting of Alan Hodgson, Rick Davis, Keith Pointon and Glyn Bradley.

The game was expertly “question mastered” by Bob Langstaff and I would like to thank him along with Nick Peck from the Waters Green Phoenix who scored etc, plus the Plough Taverners (and Grenville Leah) who sorted questions. Thanks also to Pete Dykstra for his gallant efforts in trying to assemble the Park Tavern ‘B’.

Last Round Up...

Many thanks to all who attended the Finals Night on Tuesday last week.

There was an excellent turn-out - not including myself, I'm sorry to say, who was committed elsewhere - but the evening went splendidly by all accounts.  Paul Morrissey will upload some photos in due course.

The result of a very well contested Cup Final saw the Dolphin beat the Dolphin Dragons by 106 – 81. Congratulations to all concerned.

Thanks must go to Rick Davis and Allan Sherratt for asking the questions and scoring respectively – much appreciated, your fine efforts always add to the night’s entertainment, and thanks also to Alice Walker of the Ox-fford ‘C’ for question preparation.

The final trophy of this year will be settled at the start of next season as usual. The Plate Final will be:-

Park Tavern ‘B’ v Harrington Academicals

This game will be played at the AGM before the start of next season, date and place to be confirmed, although the place will undoubtedly be the Weaver! The Waters Green Phoenix and the Plough Taverners will assemble questions for this game from those not used for the Cup Final.

An excellent season saw the Robin Hood get promoted in their very first season and Jim Kennelly win the C League Individual title.

In the B League, the British Flag and Church House Bollington triumphed again, with Keith Pointon adding the B League Individual title to his C League equivalent from last year.

The Ox-fford 'C' were deserving A League Champions, achieving that most unusual feat of never losing a League game all season - no mean effort!

The Ox-fford won the Cars and Vans 4U Ltd Question Setters Trophy for their multi-picture round Specialist set of questions from way back in Week 1!

If I don’t see you before we start again, have a great summer and see you in the autumn when we will do it all again...

Regards,

MW

Tonight - last games of the season...

Where did 2011 go? Tonight sees the last League games of this season with various issues still up for grabs.

Congratulations to the Ox-fford ‘C’ for becoming A League Champions, and similarly to the British Flag for doing the same in the B League.

Apart from the Flag, everything else in the B League will be decided tonight. In promotion terms, one of the Waters Green Phoenix, Church House Bollington or Park Taverners will go up with the Flag. It is still completely unclear who may be going down to the C League will all hinging on the final games tonight.

The C League itself will have a resounding finish. We know the Knot Know-Alls and the Robin Hood are already promoted and the Robin Hood will have to score a record number of points in beating the Cock Inn if they are to overtake the Knot for the C League title. Stranger things have happened though – many of those being penalties not given to visiting teams at Old Trafford…

The last remaining entertainment for the season after all this will be the Finals Night…

The Weaver, Thornton Square, Macclesfield

Tuesday 17 April 2012

7.30pm onwards for prompt 8pm start.

The evening will consist of the Cup Final initially and then the presentation of all this season's prizes.

The Cup Final will be between the Dolphin and the Dolphin Dragons.

If you haven’t done so already, please submit your 20 questions for the Cup and Plate Finals in a sealed envelope to Waters Green Tavern by close of play tomorrow. Thank you to all those who have sent in questions already.

Also available on the Finals Night will be the season's last News & Views, which will give all the tables and statistics for the entire season. Please support the last “Do” of the season and come and collect your final News & Views - you may even find you have won something!

See you all then if not before.

Week 15...

As you can see, much has happened as a result of last week’s scores and the usual “up” (but not yet “down”) arrows have started to appear, along with a couple of trophies.

Congratulations to the Ox-fford ‘C’ who are confirmed as A League Champions with 3 rounds of games to spare. Can they go through the entire League season unbeaten???

Similar congratulations must go to the British Flag, confirmed as B League Champions and promoted to the A League for next year. There is no end of possibilities for the runner up spot which the Waters Green Phoenix are clinging onto for now.

Finally, the C League is seeing a titanic tussle between the Know Know-Alls and the Robin Hood. Only points scored separates them now with the Knot having scored just 11 points more over the season so far. Both will be promoted to the B League next year whilst they fight out the remainder of the season to see who gets the title.

Both the Knot Know-Alls and the Robin Hood have done fantastically well, bearing in mind this is only the Knot’s third season and the Robin Hood’s first.
