Specialmention must be made of Andy Ridgway and the Prince of Wales this week.

A beyond last minute lack of Question Master inthe C League meant Andy stepped in to collect the questions and ask them forthe PoW who had to play with 3 members only last week.

Two week's worth of results this time around.

Of thegames in Week 10, 6 were won by a teamwho went “first first”, i.e. first in the Specialist Round, with 5 won by teams going the other way aroundand 1 draw. In Week 11, 7 were wonby a team who went “first first”, with 5won by teams going the other way around.

There were some comments about Week 11 in terms of the quantity of politics questions contained therein. Some people have had quiteenough of politicians altogether as well, it seems!

I was quite happy with the questions, although I must confess to an abnormal interest in politics - there isn't much choice as far as I'm concerned as it is the system by which much does (or doesn't) get done. There were certainly more politics questions last week than you find in a single edition of that well known Westminster farce, PMQs...

The fight for points at the top of the Leagues is getting so tight even Chris Huhne wouldn't give any away. The A League is still within the grasp of several teams, whilst the B League couldn't be tighter, the British Flag and the Waters Green Phoenix now being neck and neck with just "points scored" in it. The C League, like the A League, could go anywhere if one side could just string a run of results together.

Two week's worth of results are attached below and the latest Cars and Vans 4U Ltd spreadsheet will follow as soon as it is available.

Week 4 saw the first draw of the season with the Ox-fford and Ox-fford 'C' sharing the spoils with 163 points apiece. Week 4 saw some healthy scoring with the Weaver's 191 being the best. No one has ever scored 200 in a game, will it ever be done?

Week 4 was also very much "Derby Day" with a lot of the pubs with two teams playing each other. The Dolphin got the better of the Dolphin Dragons and the Waters Green Phoenix did likewise over the Waters Green Rams. Peter McBride scored 45 for the Dolphin whilst Bob Langstaff chipped in with 42 for the Phoenix. The Taverners beat the Horntails in the Plough Derby, Phil Davies and Julian Amey top scoring with 30 for each team respectively.

Special mention to the Robin Hood who have had a very good couple of weeks, winning both their games to get them off the mark in the C League.

Week 5 follows on the 15th of November, then back to the Cup and Plate on the 22nd.

And they're off...

Season 31 commenced on time and the "big beasts" of quizzing have hit the ground running. Haydn Thompson from the Ox-fford 'C' has started with a score of 51, whilst the Weaver's Alan Levitt is on his tail with 48. Peter McBride (Dolphin) and Alice Walker (Ox-fford 'C') also racked up scores in the 40s with 45 apiece. The Ox-fford 'C' sit atop the A League after Week 1.

In the B League, the British Flag are off to a storming start, Tony Browne's 36 being a driver behind their first week victory. There were wins also for the Plough Taverners, Albion and Waters Green Phoenix. Bob Langstaff scored a fine 36 for the Phoenix in a very close game against the Lamb Innn, for whom Paul Griffiths replied with the same score. Top of the individual shop goes to Keith Pointon from the Waters Green Rams with a fine 42.

In the C League, the Cock Inn are setting the pace and Peter Wilcox's 36 is the top individual score. We welcome also the Robin Hood who played their first game against the Moores Monopoly, aka the Chester Road Tavern. A fine game ended in a 12-point loss for the Robin Hood against a very experienced team, but a fine start nonetheless and we hope the Hood enjoyed it!

Week 1 will be followed by Week 2 - a fact that will delight the mathematically inclined amongst you, no doubt. See you next week!

New Season 2011 - 2012

As the anti-cyclonic gloom of summer turns to the blistering heat of autumn, as well as wondering why the entire seasonal cycle has gone to pot, we welcome back Macclesfield Quiz League for Season 31...

At the AGM last Tuesday we played the Plate Final which was a finely contested affair between the Harrington Academicals and the Plough Taverners, the Harrington Academicals emerging victorious 81-79.

This makes the Harrington Academicals the first team to “retain” the Plate since CAP who won in 2003 and 2004. The memories are rolling in now!

The game was expertly “question mastered” as always by Rick Davis and I would like to thank him along with Allan Sherratt from the Church House Bollington who scored etc. Thanks also to the Lamb Inn and Chester Road Tavern for compiling the questions.

In terms of AGM business, subscriptions remain at £40 for this year.

You can pay the subs and collect all the fixtures / rules / documentation etc from the Weaver, Thornton Square between 6.30pm and 8pm on Tuesday the 4^th of October 2011. That is this coming Tuesday for those of you not hidebound by dates and times etc!

I will be there along with Marshall Barnard who will issue the usual receipts etc. Please bring you cheques / cash / postal orders / international money transfers / promissory notes from the Greek Government etc along on that night.

The first game will be the following week on Tuesday the 11^th of October.

I have almost finalised the fixtures, but Week 1 questions – i.e. the 11^th of October will be done in their entirety by the Ox-fford.

Week 2 (18^th of October) questions will be set by the Prince of Wales (Specialist) and the Waters Green Rams (General Knowledge).

Many thanks to all who attended the Finals Night on Tuesday.

There was an excellent turn-out, the Cup Final was a finely contested affair and the butties (including quiche!) were very welcome too. I have only a small number of trophies left in my possession; I will contact the winners separately.

The Cup Final was one of the best contests those of us who have seen a few of these can remember. Credit to Nick Peck of the Waters Green Phoenix and Graham Bailey and (especially) Alan Levitt of the Weaver who fettled the excellent questions - which can all be seen via the usual link to Nick's Quiz Site on the top right hand corner of this blog.

The result of a very close saw last year’s runners-up the Ox-fford ‘C’ beat the Dolphin Dragons by just 5 points, 103 – 98.

Congratulations to all concerned.

Thanks also to our very own Cameron and Clegg, otherwise known as Rick Davis and Allan Sherratt, for asking the questions and scoring respectively – much appreciated, your fine efforts added to the night’s entertainment as always.

18 weeks of titanic struggle has concluded and congratulations are due to the triumphant teams you can identify from the scores below, along with commiserations to those less successful - next season it all starts again..!

In the A League, the Weaver deserve all the congratulations for winning the title for the very first time. More amazingly, this is the first ever A League title for League stalwart and "ever present" since 1981 - Graham Bailey. A well-deserved and long-overdue success for Graham and the team.

The Harrington Academicals and the British Flag will play in the B League next year. Both teams will be missed and were excellent opponents (and good company) throughout the season. Good luck for next time around.

Alan Hodgson won the A League Individual standings with a fantastic 57 on the final week of the season - the highest score on the night by a country mile (or the width of Wayne Rooney's wallet, whichever is thicker...).

Alan wins this title for a record 11th time. No one else is even close in this race. Alan - a fantastic effort, well done.

Mark Watson and Haydn Thompson filled second and third places. on behalf of the various Ox-ffords.

The B League saw the tightest finish to the season with the Nags Head just edging out the Castle by one point. The Nags Head and the Castle both fell through the relegation trap-door last year but have made an immediate return to the A League. Well done to all concerned.

The Albion and Cock Inn will start next season one rung lower, but their time will surely come again.

Rick Davis won the B League Individuall title for the third time (to go with his two C League titles), beating Church House Bollington colleague Ed Baron into second place with Alasdair Reid from the Nags in third.

In the C League, the Waters Green Rams won the title and promotion for the very first time in their current form - congratulations to all for a fantastic season. They will be a force next year in the B League, as will the Plough Taverners who had an excellent campaign in finishing a very deserved second.

Keith Pointon won the C League Individual title by a goodly margin, a first win for Keith in the League to cap a great season for he and his Waters Green colleagues.

Phil Davies (Plough Taverners) and Rosalie James (Knot Know-Alls) complete the top three.

In terms of questions, the Lamb Inn won the Cars and Vans 4U Ltd Question Setters Trophy with their Specialist questions from Week 10. Congratulations to all those responsible.

Tempus fugit…

Tuesday sees the last League games of this season with much still up for grabs. As the dust starts to think about settling on another season, some of the issues are being decided.

Congratulations to Graham Bailey’s Weaver for becoming A League Champions for the first time – the first time in 13 seasons that a tream from the Ox-fford / Dolphin (Bridgewater) hasn’t won, so it is about time we had a change!

Lord knows what will happen in the B League when any two from the top 4 could be promoted and one of them will win it! I’m keeping my money in my pocket and placing no bets on this one…

The C League will have a resounding finish as the top two (and season-long pacesetters) the Plough Taverners and Waters Green Rams meet at the Plough. Whoever wins will be champions.

The last remaining entertainment for the season after all this will be the Finals Night…

As promised, here are two weeks worth of results during which much has happened and the usual “up” and “down” arrows have started to appear…

Particular congratulations to the Plough Taverners and Waters Green Rams on promotion from the C League. They are now just fighting for the title over the last two weeks of the season. Given that they meet on the last week, it should be mighty dust-up to bring down the curtain.

It would be a braver man than I who would forecast the outcome of promotion from the B League with any number of permutations still possible. The A League title will go to either the Weaver or the Ox-fford with the Weaver having the advantage of points on the board at present.

Personal Scores

We are now well beyond the stage of the season when just the best 11 or 12 individual scores from however many games you have played are counted – 11 in the A League, 12 in the B and C Leagues. Several players have now played more games than these numbers. Just in case anyone was wondering why their totals had not increased as much as they thought they should have…

Here is the full hit of results as we reach the halfway stage of the season and our Christmas break.

Nothing in it at all at the top of the A League with the Ox-fford top by virtue of scoring a handful of points more than the Weaver. The Dolphin remain third with any number of possibilities still on the cards for the second half.

The B League looks likely to be contested between the current top 4. The Waters Green Phoenix lead the way, just 1 point ahead of the Nags Head and the Church House Bollington, with the Castle just 1 further point back in fourth.

It is a similar state of affairs in the C League with 4 teams contesting the honours, the Plough Taverners having a 2 point lead over second placed Waters Green Rams - thanks to a narrow 8 point win in this week's game. The return match in the last game of the season could be interesting...

The Pack Horse Bowling Club are level on points with the Rams with the Knot Know-Alls in a very solid fourth.

It has been a while, but we are now up to date with all the Macclesfield Quiz League results to date. The various contests are boiling up nicely and Week 9's games on Tuesday the 14th of December will take us to half-way and a break for Christmas.

Given that New Years Day is a Sunday with Bank Holiday in lieu on the following Monday, we are taking an extra week off – we got “snowed off” in the corresponding week last year, if you remember – and we start again on Tuesday the 11th of January.

Light nights are now but a distant memory as Week 4 came and went. I'm hoping my science question from last week has gone for some time as well!

Another action packed Tuesday with individual honours going to Keith Pointon from the C League's Waters Green Rams, who outscored everyone else bar none with 45 - well done Keith.

Breaking news from the Church House Bollington who may indeed have broken new ground by fielding League's first German competitor, Christian Stocker. Christian was instrumental in picking up a number of passed-overs and was jubilant when being the only player to know the ‘Fast Eddie’ from Motorhead question. It did however look like he would remain individually pointless until coming up with Jack Nicholson for the very last question of the night. Sadly the Church House were unable to force a penalty shoot-out where Christian would no doubt have been untouchable...

Another enjoyable evening overall. Where else can you combine tokamaks, bog-snorkling, aged high-jumpers and the Lavender Hill Mob? Who needs a TV!

Some very close games this week with the Cock Inn and Lamb Inn having the closest of all finishing in a draw with 121 each - the second draw of the season at this early stage.

Special mention should be made of Chris Wearne's 45 for the Dolphin Dragons (and Dave Turner's 33), along with the best score of the week, 48 for Rick Davis of the Church House Bollington. Julian Amey of the Plough Horntails also had 42 in the same game.

Keith Pointon from the Waters Green Rams continued his strong start to the season with a 'C League best score of 45.

As the leaves begin to pile up and bury the last of the fractured dreams of summer, what better than to contemplate a winter of asking (and occasionally answering) daft questions on an ad hoc basis in an ever changing kaleidoscope of locations…it can only mean the return of the Macclesfield Quiz League.

The League AGM and Plate Final took place last Tuesday the 21st of September 2010 at the Weaver on Thornton Square, Macclesfield. The Plate Final was a finely contested affair between the Harrington Academicals and the Waters Green Phoenix, the Harrington Academicals emerging victorious 90-78.

The game was expertly “question mastered” as always by Rick Davis and I would like to thank him along with Allan Sherratt from the Church House Bollington who scored etc. Thanks also to Dave McGuinness and Matt Eagles for compiling the questions.

We will therefore start and play the first round of League games on Tuesday the 5th of October. This will allow us to play exactly half the League games before Christmas and half afterwards, as we did last year.

In the A League, the Ox-fford ‘C’ deserve all the congratulations for winning the title for the very first time, relegating last year’s winners (and stable mates) the Ox-fford into second place.

The Nags Head and the Castle fell through the relegation trap-door, but both teams will be missed and were excellent opponents (and very good company) through the season.

Mark Watson won the A League Individual standings with Haydn Thompson second and Alice Walker third, sharing the top three places between the Ox-ffords.

Very special mention must be made of Haydn Thompson who scored the magical 60 out of 60 full house personal score on the 17th of November 2009. This is only the second time this has happened in League history, the mighty Alan Hodgson being the first to crack it.

The B League saw a tight finish to the season with the Knot Inn winning the title by just one point from the British Flag. Congratulations to both teams - a wonderful effort and promotion to the A League looms.

The Plough Taverners and Pack Horse Bowling Club will start next season one rung lower, but their time will surely come again.

Art Higham won the B League Individual title for the very first time, just pipping John Hargreaves from the Albion and Rick Davis from the Church House Bollington, both stalwarts at this lark for many years.

In the C League, the Lamb Inn won the title and promotion after just missing out last year - congratulations to all for a fantastic season. They will be a force next year in the B League, as will the Cock Inn who had an excellent campaign in finishing a very deserved second.

Andy Bailey won the C League Individual title by a goodly margin, a second win in 3 years for this title for him. Paul Griffiths and Jackie Hulme – regular “Top Tenners” – did even better this year in finishing joint second for the Lamb Inn and Cock Inn respectively. David Cooper secured a first well deserved “Top Three” finish for the Baths Speedos.

In terms of questions, the Dolphin won the Cars and Vans 4U Ltd Question Setters Trophy with their Specialist questions from Week 9. This is the first time the Dolphin have ever won this trophy – well done indeed.

Apologies again for the late updating and tardy blog-keeping, pressures of that dreary work business have been allowed to hold sway lately.

Tuesday the 23rd of March sees the last League games of this season – the postponed Week 10 games – with much still up for grabs. As the dust starts to think about settling on another season, some of the issues are starting to be decided. Tonight will see the final calculations fall into place.

The last remaining entertainment for the season will then be the Finals Night at the Weaver, Thornton Square, Macclesfield, Tuesday 13th April 2010, 7.30pm onwards for prompt 8pm start.

The evening will consist of the Cup Final initially and then the presentation of all this season's prizes.

The Cup Final will be (for the second year running) between the Dolphin and the Ox-fford ‘C’.

If you haven’t done so already, please submit your 20 questions for the Cup and Plate Finals in a sealed envelope to Waters Green Tavern by close of play tomorrow. Thank you to all those who have sent in questions already.

Haydn’s full Cars and Vans 4U Ltd spreadsheet has been circulated and a summary appears in the post below. The latest calculation involves the last two week’s worth of questions.

We have had a run of unfortunate news recently in terms of dear departed friends, but here is a positive story for a change. Liz Horrocks from the Dolphin Dragons has just had a novel published, which is (and will remain) at least one more than me!

The book is entitled The Edge of Doom from Vanguard Press / Pegasus Publishers and is available from all the usual sources these days – Waterstones and Amazon both have it on line as well. The summary describes the story as “…set in a variety of times, but focussed in the Cheshire countryside, The Edge of Doom is rooted in ancient stories, and leads eventually to the sandstone hill of Alderley Edge, a place of mystery, where legend and history meet.”

Amazon say that people who bought the book have also bought The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Time Traveler’s Wife. Illustrious company indeed!

Well done indeed to Liz and I have posted the official ‘Press Release’ too so you can find it and get buying!

I think Liz is the second Dragon (no slight intended) to enter print. Fellow quizzer Chris Wearne had a book on economics published back in 2008 examining Britain’s increasingly shaky love affair with money. A team of many talents, to be sure…

More sad news reaches me this week that Betty Dobson, a player for many teams going back much further than I can remember in the Quiz League, has passed away after being ill for the last year of so. Betty has most recently featured for the Sutton Church House and last played in the League in 2008. Many people will have met Betty over the years – she was playing for the Franklin, I think, when I started – and she will be very much missed. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends. I will pass on any more details as I get them.

Exciting stuff now. The A League is surely within the grasp of the Ox-fford 'C' as they go 2 points clear with a game in hand on their nearest rivals. A tricky run-in looms with games against the Castle, both Dolphins and the Weaver, but the 'C' are on fire this season, making Amy William's run of form in the slippery tea-tray event look small beer by comparison.

The B League is in a fascinating stage with the Knot Inn slipping to a very rare defeat this week, offering fresh hope to all the teams down to 6th place. The Waters Green Phoenix face the Knot this coming Tuesday in a battle royal...

You can perm any 2 from 5 in the C League as well as the Cock Inn did a 'Knot Inn' and lost for only the third time this season. All to play for just yet...

Some very close and high scoring games this week and we look set for an exciting conclusion to the season over the next few weeks.

In the A League, the Ox-fford 'C' won the local derby by beating the Ox-fford 177 - 164. Haydn Thompson continues his 'on fire' season with another 48, whilst all the Ox-fford 'C' were in fine form - Alice Walker with 42, Caroline Massey with 33 and Tim Massey with a season's best 30. Any team from the top 4 can win the A League, but the Ox-fford 'C' are in pole position as it stands.

The Dolphin derby went the Dolphin's way as they beat the Dolphin Dragons 174 - 130, Peter McBride and Alan Hodgson registering season's pbs of 48 and 42 respectively.

The final A League fixture saw the Harrington Academicals beat the Castle 161 - 132. Accies top scorer Dave Partington found the questions very much to his liking with a 'pb' 45, as did John Knight for the Castle with 36.

Not much separates several teams at the top of the B League either, the Knot Inn are still on top spot but are being ruthlessly pursued by the Church House Bollington, who just beat the Knot this week by 1 point, 127 - 126. Ed Baron scored a B League best of the week pb with 42 whilst Rick Davis stayed at the top of the B League Individual standings with 33. Art Higham's 30 was the Knot's best on the night.

The Plough derby saw the Taverners just beat the Horntails by 5 points, 137 - 132. Phil Davies (36) and David Williams (27) did the deed for the Taverners, whilst Julian Amey (30) and Dave McGuinness (30) kept the Horntail wagging. Welcome back to the League Julian, by the way, after a lengthy absence!

The Waters Green Phoenix are third after a 136 - 124 win over old rivals the British Flag, Wendy Brown and Jon Thompson scoring 27 apiece for the WGP.

Finally, the New Castle are the League's "draw specialists" after their second drawn game of the season in sharing a 121 - 121 game with the Albion. Very good scoring all round, Graham Wallace and John Hargreaves top scored with 30 for each team, whilst Heather Wallace had a pb 27 for the New Castle.

To the C League now, and the Cock Inn stay top after a 137 - 111 win over the Harrington 'B'. Peter Bullivant scored a pb 36 for the Cock.

The Lamb Inn benefited from Chris Butler's season best (and top C League individual score of the week) 39 as they beat the Royal Oak 153 - 95 to stay in second place.

Keith Pointon top scored with 36 as the Waters Green Rams beat the Chester Road Tavern 138 - 104, Tony of the Moores clan top scoring with 30 for the CRT.

Finally, the Baths Speedos are picking up the pace as a very good all round performance saw then beat the Sutton Church House 135 - 90. Andy Bailey (33), Dave Cooper (30) and Warren Jones (a pb 21) were all in a 'go faster' mood for the Speedos on the night.

Some tough questions this week to test the slumbering post-Christmas intellects, but still some very good scores were posted.

Particular congratulations to the Nags Nead (née Pussycat Guys) who recorded their first A League win of the season against the Dolphin Dragons after coming out on the wrong side of some close games earlier on.

Welcome also to Keith Pointon, a new player for the Waters Green Rams who scored a very respectable 27 on his debut in the League.

Nearly two-thirds of the way through now and the "business end" of the season looms - it will all unfold before your very eyes here.
